Despite very wet conditions, the Students were able to defeat Blacktown 62-0 in their first home game of the season.

The Sydney rep girls were told they would be replaced at halftime due to the 2015 National Women’s Rugby Championships being held from the 24th-26th of June, and were keen to set a solid platform with some great attacking raids. Barbara Waddell and Ash Hewson were able to dictate play on the back of some excellent forward play, which lead to a few quick tries by Ash, Kim Davey and Lope Leiataua. Spectators may have thought Kathryn Buggy was a blockbusting centre the way she tore through the defence with a 50 metre break only to be run down just short of the line. Some great support play by Ash lead to another try in the first half. Lope, Michelle Bailey, Grace Hamilton, Brittany Leauanae, Haruka Takahasi and Eloise Vunakece were continually ripping in with barnstorming runs, while Gaelle Marcassus’ grass cutting tackles and offloads were extremely impressive. The Sydney Uni backline looked threatening all first half and due to the damage done by our forwards, Ash and Kim were able to break the line with ease denying the outside backs.

The real test came in the 2nd half with many of the girls moving to new positions and the responsibility of directing the team fell on Ana Antunes and Amy Foo having to step up at 9 and 10. Veiongo Lamipeti was impressive with her power game and Kate Porter, Michelle Dang and Lope took over in the forwards as the team adjusted with Amy looking to attack at every opportunity. Bronte Stutchbury was lucky enough to be on the end of some good lead up work to score in her first game of the season. Although at times in the second half, the team looked a little dismantled Jade Fonua, Mel Tri, Mikayla Baker, Rachael See and Ianeta Baker were quick to clean up any loose ball and set us back on track finding field position. Special mention to non-stop efforts by Eloise, Gaelle, Kathryn and Lope, without forgetting Ash’s contribution of 4 tries in the first half.

The action stays at St John’s Oval Saturday July 4th as Sydney University host Parramatta at 2pm.

Full Time score: Sydney University 62 (Ash Hewson 4, Amy Foo 2, Lope Leiataua, Kim Davey, Michelle Dang, Bronte Stutchbury tries, Ash Hewson 5, Lope Leiataua goals) d Blacktown Scorpions 0 at St. John’s Oval.
