It was another great win for the Sydney University Women’s Rugby (SUWR) girls in Campbelltown last Saturday. Despite being down on troops, a number of new recruits stepped up and showed that training has been paying off. For the second game running, SUWR have denied the opposition from crossing their try line. It was a day where the team held a great defensive structure.
The first try of the match came within minutes when Campbelltown kicked the ball to get out of their half. University secured the ball and a few quick passes saw winger Racheal See cross the line. The first half also saw the Students’ forward pack dominating the ruck, resulting in a penalty against Campbelltown which lead to halfback Barbara Waddell scoring from a quick tap.
Campbelltown maintained their tenacity throughout the second half, which made it difficult for the Students to score. However, Amy Foo found space on the wing and quickly added points to the scoreboard. Emily Chancellor and Fiona Jones continued to impress with non-stop effort, Emily securing the last try of the game. USA recruit Tammy Bouma took on a huge responsibility at the line-outs together with Haruka Takahashi. Their continuous effort around the paddock was enormous. Back rower Fiona Jones stepped up to play 10 on the weekend and together with halfback Barbara Waddell, the duo were able to direct the team well. Although some skills and continuity were hindered due to a number of key starting players being away, Coach Phil Brown was glad to see the squad rallied together. Overall, it was a great team effort as the squad moves towards some harder games.
The win means Sydney Uni and Warringah are now at the top of the Sydney Women’s Rugby Union ladder.
The action shifts to Waverley Oval Saturday June 13th, when Waverley Rugby host Sydney University at 11:40am.
