Sydney University Lions capped off another fantastic season by claiming the 2014 American Football Waratah Bowl with a convincing 43-14 win over the Western Sydney Pirates at 5Sports, Caringah on Saturday.
Having finished second to the Pirates on the competition ladder, the Lions had to play through a sudden-death semi-final against UTS to reach the season decider, but avenged their regular season loss to the minor premiers to claim their 12th consecutive title.
Alex Watson, who shouldered an additional load this year, was a machine on the ground, and duly awarded with Waratah Bowl MVP, the second time the young back has earned the award.
Having finished runners-up in their inaugural year in the competition in 1984, the Lions have since won a record 16 NSW premierships, with back-to-back titles in 1985-86, titles in 1992 and 1995, and a 12-year streak since 2003.
