Sydney University Cricket Club has five players in the NSW squad to take on Queensland in a Sheffield Shield encounter at the Sydney Cricket Ground tomorrow (Tuesday).

Openers Ryan Carters and Nick Larkin and No.3 Scott Henry will make up the top order of the batting line-up, while all-rounder Sean Abbott and off-spinner Will Somerville have also been included in the squad,

Meanwhile, young leg-spinner Jonte Pattison added to his representative career last week, playing for a Cricket Australia XI against India. This season he has also played for Australian Under 19s in a series against Sri Lanka and for NSW Under 23s against Tasmania.

On the club level scene, Sydney’s big wet caused problems with day one of most of the round of two-day matches at the weekend.

Sydney University’s First Grade encounter with Northern District was only 37 overs old when bad light stopped play at Mark Taylor Oval, with the hosts 3-80. Day one had been reduced to 63 overs due to the wet wicket, but even that was not achievable.

Sydney University, the defending First Grade premiers, need to start amassing some points if they are to collect the Belvidere Cup for the 2014-15 season.

The Students are seventh on the competition ladder on 12 points after five rounds of the two-day format. Manly-Warringah lead the competition on 22 points, with Bankstown (18), Mosman (18), Hawkesbury (18), Randwick-Petersham (16) and Penrith (12) making up the top six.

Following the Northern District encounter, Sydney University have 50-over matches against UNSW on December 20 and Randwick-Petersham on January 10, both at Camperdown Oval to start a possible climb up the ladder.

Will Hay’s return to form continued with solid 91 for Sydney University Seconds against Northern District at Sydney University No.1 Oval on Saturday.

Opener Hay anchored the Students’ innings of 8-301 off 90 overs, with Adam Theobald (64), Max Hope (63) and Steven Hobson (30) helping the side to a competitive tally.

Day one of the Third Grade fixture, scheduled for Asquith Oval, was washed out, while bad light stopped Fourth Grade with Northern District 9-213 at stumps, and Fifth Grade, with Northern District 8-230 at stumps.

And the Round 4 Poidevin-Gray Shield match against Hawkesbury at Sydney University No.1 Oval on Sunday was declared a draw when rain stopped play at 5:18pm, with Sydney University having made 7-279 off their 50 overs and the visitors 1-24 in reply.

The lower grade ladders show Seconds sitting in fourth spot, Thirds running 11th, Fourths running 6th, Fifths in 8th berth and the Poidevin-Gray side in 10th sport.

As a result, Sydney University are now 7th on a tight Club Championship ladder, which is led by Northern District.
