Sydney University fencers John Downes and Patrick Daley won bronze medals competing with the Australian Universities team at the recent Commonwealth Fencing Championships held in Largs, Scotland. Both are Sydney University Sports Scholarship holders
Downs finished third in the individual men’s epee in a 60-strong field. Dudley Tredger of England won the gold medal, with Marc Burkhalter of Wales collecting the silver. Downs was also a member of the Australian team which came 5th in the team competition.
Daley came 16th in the individual men’s foil, after being knocked out of the event by fellow Sydney University competitor Sholto Douglas. But he was a member of the Australian team that finished with the bronze medal.
Douglas ended up coming 5th in the individual men’s foil but did not stay on in Scotland for the team event.
Sydney University’s Rita Sokolovskaya came 24th in the individual women’s foil and was a member of the 5th placed Australian women’s foil team.
Wenying Wang of Singapore won the individual women’s foil gold, with Chloe Dickson of Scotland earning the silver medal and Cathy Cool of England claiming the bronze.
Singapore won the women’s team foil, with Scotland claiming silver and England the bronze.
The 2014 Commonwealth Fencing Championships attracted 300 athletes from 20 countries.
