Sydney University’s Division One rugby league side were given the cold shoulder by the Australian Defence Force Academy in their Round 11 Tertiary Cup encounter at Addison Oval, Canberra on Saturday.
Taking the field in freezing, wet conditions, Sydney University were in contention until the final play, having battled to go to half-time at 10-all, before succumbing 22-18 at the final bell.
The team welcomed Elias Dagher and Jamison Walker into First Grade, while Marcus McCarthy and Kurt Lewis returned to the top side with strong games, along with players’ player Kingston Nicholson. Kurt Lewis, Brendan Lee, Tom McCarthy, Liam Coe scored tries for University, with Lee landing one goal in the extreme conditions.
The Kobe Jones Man of the Match points went to: Kingston Nicholson (3), Scott Bunch (2), Liam Coe (1).
Sydney University’s Division Two side backed up in Canberra for their second game in seven days and came away with a 26-2 win over ADFA after leading 22-nil at halftime.
They were helped by excellent contributions from Jye Braga and Nathan Rokia and the return of barnstorming Jordan Sio. An injury to Mohamad Sherawy caused the game to finish early in the tough conditions.
Myles Fowler, Jordan Sio, Brad Roach, Eden Pomare and Nathan Rokia scored tries for the Lions, with Eden Pomare landing three goals.

Sydney University will take on Sydney Trains at Henson Park this Saturday, with Second Grade scheduled for an 11.15am kick-off and First Grade scheduled for a 1pm kick-off as a curtain-raiser to the Newtown Jets v Cronulla Sharks NSW Cup match.
