The Australian Gliders posted their first win at the 2014 IWBF Women’s World Wheelchair Basketball Championships in Toronto, Canada, on Saturday, with an imposing 90-10 result over Peru.
Chasing their first World Championship medal since capturing bronze in 2002, the Gliders opened the tournament with a surprise 68-52 loss to the US.
Sydney University Flames players Sarah Stewart and Stephanie van Leeuwen are in the 12-player Australian squad at the championships.
Stewart is a three-time Paralympian, two-time World Championship representative and former SUSF EAP scholarship holder, while van Leeuwen is making her major tournament debut.
The pair completed a 10-game tour of Canada and the US with the Gliders in preparation for the World Championships.
The Gliders have remaining games in the preliminary rounds against France, Mexico and Netherlands.
