Sydney University returned to the winner’s list with a hard-fought 30-18 win over Southern Districts in their Round 11 NSW Premier Rugby clash at Forshaw Rugby Park on Saturday.

Having lost to Eastwood and drawn with Randwick in their previous two matches, Sydney University defended stoutly to hold out Southern Districts for a four-try to two win.

Winger Henry Clunies-Ross provided two of those tries in another fine performance, while halfback Jake Gordon and fullback Jack Macklin also contributed five-pointers for the bonus point win.

And five-eighth Dan Kelly returned from injury to pilot over two conversions and two penalty goals.

The win consolidated Sydney University’s place at fourth on the ladder – and closing. Unbeaten Manly sit astride the  Shute Shield ladder on 54 points, with Warringah (43), Eastwood (41), Sydney University (38), Parramatta (33) and Southern Districts (27) making up the top six.

The First Grade win completed a clean-sweep for the Students on the day, with Seconds posting a 45-25 result, Thirds winning 17-13, and Fourths triumphing 17-14.

Sydney University Colts also won their three grades, with Firsts winning 59-50 in a match that featured 16 tries; and Seconds and Thirds posting 45-12 results.

The clean-sweep elevated Sydney University to second on the Club Championship ladder. Manly still hold sway on 1919 points, with Sydney University (1845), Eastwood (1807) and Randwick (1356) making up the top four.

Sydney University lead the Colts Club Championship ladder on 533 points, ahead of Northern Suburbs (429), Eastwood (424) and Southern Districts (372).

Sydney University will host Parramatta at No.1 Oval this Saturday, with First Grade to kick-off at 3pm.
