The Universities Women’s Cricket Club’s (UWCC) Brewer Shield under 17 girls team have capped off an amazing season for the club, after claiming victory in Sunday’s Limited Overs grand final.
With a T20 grand final victory already achieved in December, UWCC’s under 17 side proved far too strong for the Campbelltown-Camden Ghosts – achieving a convincing six week victory with 23 overs to spare.
After failing to win the toss at Raby Oval, UWCC’s bowlers were superb, bowling out the Ghosts in the 32nd over for just 100. Openers Nell Gibson (2-15 from five overs) and Dharshia Srinivas (2-19 from 4 overs) achieved the early breakthroughs and were UWCC’s most effective bowlers.
Despite losing an early wicket, UWCC made light work of their run chase. Opening batter Serena Liu (50 retired not out) and wicket-keeper batter Maddy Darke (21) were exceptional as UWCC cruised to victory in just the 27th over.
UWCC’s success this season hasn’t been completely left to the Brewer Shield squad to achieve. Just over a week ago, the club won its maiden first grade Limited Overs grand final.
