Five members of the Sydney University Rugby League Football Club have been awarded scholarships under Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness’s (SUSF) Elite Athlete Program (EAP).
This is the first time in 15 years that anyone from the club has received such recognition from the program.
Jake Vrahnos, Dominic Dagher, Thomas McCarthy, Liam Coe and Gideon Mzembe will join the ranks of current and former Sydney University alumni who have benefited from the program since its inception in 1990.
Scholarships are awarded to students across a variety of athletic disciplines, with the aim of assisting them in balancing their sporting and academic goals. A range of services and benefits are accessible to scholarship students including financial assistance, dieticians, tutors and sports psychologists.
The club views the achievement of the five players as an example of the high calibre of the team across the board, and a tangible outcome of its focus on developing players both on and off the field.
Club President Chris Kintis said, “We’re very proud of the boys. They’re a credit to the club and a great example of what we’re trying to achieve, which is to work with SUSF to support the players as athletes and in their personal development as part of the wider community.”
The club is expecting this success to continue as part of a new era for rugby league at Sydney University. There are further developments in the pipeline to help guide the team to new heights – not just in the game, but as individuals.
