After a two year absence from the NSW Tertiary Rugby League competition, the Sydney University Rugby League Football Club (SURLFC) took to the field for their first trial match against UWS.

Staged on Saturday afternoon at Middleton Park, Bass Hill, Sydney Uni played two separate teams for each half of football.

In the first half Sydney Uni’s front rowers Scott Bunch and Darby Judd had strong games in the middle of the park, while Jay Parker linked well with the backline and gave good service to his centres and wingers.

Sydney Uni continued to display a solid defensive structure in the second half and with ball in hand they found plenty of gaps in the UWS defence thanks largely to energetic performances from Steve Tziotis and Adam Irvine.

No score was officially kept, with both clubs agreeing not to kick for goal and exchange kick offs after tries were scored, but Sydney Uni scored three tries to UWS’s four. The game provided Sydney Uni’s players with some valuable game time and allowed combinations to continue to form.

Sydney Uni will now concentrate on improving defensive structures when they take on newly promoted Cumberland in another trial match this Saturday at 3pm at St. Johns Oval (Sydney University).

Following this, supporters are invited back to the Chippendale Hotel, where they will have the opportunity meet the players over some refreshments.

The club is looking forward to as many Old Boys and supporters at the ground this Saturday as possible.
