The Sydney Uni women’s water polo Lions have beaten old rivals UWA twice, but succumbed to the powerful Fremantle Marlins on their Perth road trip.
The Lions were hit hard by the illness to Stingers goalkeeper Lea Yanitsas on the flight to Perth. She was forced to miss the first Fremantle game in which Sydney Uni performed gallantly, going down 16-12. Isobel Bishop and Sarah Harris were also affected by the bug that now was going through the team. Keesja Gofers scored four for the Lions, Gi Clark and Harris scored three each and Gabby Wikman one.
The first encounter with UWA was hard fought in the first half before the Lions emerged 11-3 winners. Harris scored four, Gofers and Bishop three apiece and Clark one.
In the second Marlins game Sydney Uni led 6-5 at half time, but some costly errors saw the home side triumph 11-8. Harris top scored with five, Gofers two and Emily Scott one.
The road trip was rounded out with a 13-6 win at UWA, but the game more difficult than the score indicated. Harris scored five, Gofers four, Bishop two and Clark and Bronte Halligan one each.
The Lions have a 6-2 record and now host the Adelaide Jets on Friday at 8.30pm and Saturday at 5.00pm. Both games will be played at the Sydney Uni Sports & Aquatic Centre (SUSAC).
