Sydney University’s quest for more cricket silverware came unstuck at University Oval on Sunday when Northern District posted a 95-run win to claim the 2013-14 First Grade Limited Overs final.
The match had been called off the previous Sunday when heavy rain intervened, but the rescheduled final was played in perfect conditions, with the visitors winning the toss and taking first use of wicket.
Daniel Hughes led the way as Northern District rattled up an imposing 9-254 from their 50 overs. The opener top-scored with 67, cracking seven boundaries and a six in his 81-ball stay.
Hughes shared a 102-run partnership with No.3 Neil Kimberley (44) to set the scene for a big total, and Chris Green (53 not out) and Andrew Harriott (33) duly obliged.
Young University leg-spinner Jonte Pattison turned in a handy 10-over spell to claim 2-37, including Hughes and Kimberley, while Will Somerville picked up 2-41 from his 10 overs. All-rounder Sean Abbott went for 76 from his 10 overs.
Sydney University were in trouble from the outset, losing NSW run-machine Ryan Carters for a duck, Nick Larkin for four, Abbott for three and skipper Greg Mail for a duck, to be 4-34.
Opener Scott Henry kept the Students’ hopes alive, topscoring with 69 from 71 balls, including seven boundaries and a six. But when he was bowled by Green, Sydney University were a shaky 5-99.
Mark Faraday (44) and David Miller (23) kept the scoreboard ticking, but Green had the last say, finishing with 5-28 from eight overs.
Having finished minor premiers in the Limited Overs competition, Sydney University were looking to claim the treble. They also lead the two-day competition for the Belvidere Cup and have already clinched the Club Championship. But it was not to be, with Northern District proving too good on the day.
