Sydney University will be represented by an incredible 19 rowers at the Interstate Regatta on Saturday at the Sydney International Regatta Centre in Penrith.
A strong 52-person NSW team was named for this weekend’s Regatta. In the squad and selected to race include Sydney University rowers Sasha Belonogoff (men’s single scull), Holly Lawrence (women’s lightweight quad), Edward De Carvalho (men’s lightweight four), Nicola Metcalfe (women’s eight), Daniel Whitehead, Tom Whitehead, Alex Purnell, Joshua David (youth men’s eight), Ellena Winstanley (women’s eight), Jack Hargreaves, Fergus Pragnell, Nick Purnell, Matt Ryan, Nick Wheatley, and cox: Toby Lister (men’s eight). Madeleine Wallace, India Evans (youth women’s eight), Nick Hudson and Cameron Girdlestone (men’s eight) were also selected in the squad as reserves.
Speaking on behalf of Sydney University Boat Club (SUBC) and Sydney University Women’s Rowing Club (SUWRC), SUBC Director of Rowing, Mark Prater said “This is a pleasing representation from Sydney University in the state team.
“Our rowers will play a significant role in trying to retain the Rowing Australia Cup for overall Interstate winners, as well as defending the King’s Cup men’s eight, youth men’s and youth women’s eights titles.”
Sydney University will be represented in seven of the eight events on Saturday at the Interstate Regatta. Saturday’s racing is part of the overall Sydney International Rowing Regatta.
A good showing from Sydney University’s rowers is expected to lead to several of them achieving selection in the Australian Team for the first leg of the Rowing World Cup, which will be held in Sydney in March.
Final selections for the Australian Team will then be held in April to pick the crews to race at the World Championships later in the year.
