Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness (SUSF) seniors group fitness instructor John ‘Sparrow’ Dowse’s classes have never been more popular, and now he’s been awarded with a medal of the Order of Australia (OAM).
The 78-year-old former Sydney University rugby union premiership winner and 1961 Wallaby fly-half was awarded an OAM on Australia Day for service to the welfare of the aged through a range of health initiatives.
Dowse runs seven group fitness classes a week for seniors at the Sydney Uni Sports & Aquatic Centre (SUSAC), in the new Brydens Group Fitness Room.
The man known as ‘Sparrow’ has been running the classes since 2006 and has developed a cult following amongst SUSF gym goers.
Each class rotates between 25 different exercises and focuses on building strength, balance and endurance.
