Some miserly bowling from all-rounder Sean Abbott, Tim Ley and leg-spinner Jonte Pattison helped Sydney University to first innings points over Northern District on Saturday and kept them atop the Sydney First Grade competition ladder.

Having declared late on day one at 8-300, thanks to Nick Larkin’s 133, the Students rolled Northern District for 153, with Abbott (3-18), Ley (3-31) and Pattison (2-33) sharing the bulk of the spoils at University No.1 Oval.

Sydney University then batted out the day to finish on 0-65, with Ryan Carters on 45 not out.

Ben Joy and Adam Theobald set up Sydney University Second Grade for an outright result over Northern District at Mark Taylor Oval.

Joy claimed 6-29 as the hosts crumbled for 82 in their first innings; and Theobald cracked 146 in the Students’ reply of 8(dec)-320.

Josh Toyer (3-35) and David Miller (3-40) helped roll Northern District for 182 in their second occupation as the Students collected 10 points, winning by an innings and 56 runs.

The outright points extended Sydney University’s lead in the Second Grade competition. The Students now head the First, Second and Third grade ladders and the Club Championship ladder.

With just the one loss in 12 rounds, First Grade are on 69 competition points, with Penrith (54), Mosman (52), Manly-Warringah (49), Randwick-Petersham (49) and Bankstown (43) making up the top six.

Sydney University Fourths are in 16th position, while Fifths are in 10th position and a numerical possibility of making the semi-finals if they come home with a wet sail on the back of some outright results.

Meanwhile, in the Sydney Women’s grade competition, Universities First Grade are second on the ladder after 17 rounds.

St George-Sutherland (76) points head the ladder, with Universities (67), Gordon (63) and Bankstown Sports (58) making up the top four. Universities are 6th in the Second Grade competition and 4th in Third Grade.

They sit atop the Brewers Shield competition and lie third in the Club Championship behind St George-Sutherland and Campbelltown-Camden.
