A young Sydney University side have retained the annual intervarsity trophy, after claiming a comfortable victory over Adelaide University early in the New Year.
Led by first grader and former SUSF Elite Athlete Program (EAP) scholarship holder Nick Larkin, Sydney University defeated their Adelaide compatriots by an innings and 70 runs on the third and final day of play on Thursday January 2.
After winning the toss, Adelaide University elected to bat on a flat looking Sydney Uni Oval No. 1 wicket.
A great effort from Sydney Uni’s bowlers, spearh-eaded by Dave Miller, restricted Adelaide to 207.
Fellow former SUSF EAP scholarship Miller (who claimed nine wickets in last year’s match) took four wickets and shared the spoils with young leg spinner Ryan Kurtz, who also claimed four scalps.
Sydney Uni then dominated a tired looking Adelaide attack, amassing 425. Miller was again the star, scoring a controlled and mature 148. He was well supported by Darius Visser (86), Nick Larkin (51) and Jack Maddox (36).
With 85 overs left to play on a spinning wicket and a lead of 218, Sydney Uni were in the box seat to claim the win.
The bowling unit were again impressive on the third day. James Shepherd claimed one wicket, Keiran Tate grabbed two and Ryan Danne also chimed in with some skilful swing bowling to take two wickets.
Talented leg spinner Darius Visser then mopped up the tale to secure an innings and 70 run victory for the home side.
The trophy will now remain with Sydney University for another 12 months before Sydney University Cricket Club (SUCC) tour Adelaide in early 2015.
