  3. Sydney University Rugby League Football Club January 2014 Update

We hope you are excited about the 2014 rugby league season as we are! The Sydney University RLFC has been busy over the past month and we are delighted to share this update with all of our supporters and friends.

Major Commercial Partnerships
The Club is happy to announce that it has formed commercial partnerships with Rentfleet as its new major (and front-of-jersey sponsor) and the Chippendale Hotel as its new back-of-jersey sponsor.  For more information please click on the attached link which leads to our recent announcement:

Pre-Season Training
Pre-season training commenced in early January on St Andrews Oval and we currently have a squad of 20 players training with us, all of which have strong rugby league experience.  We will be profiling the Club’s players as we lead into the regular season.  The majority of the players are current Sydney University students.

Our pre-season training is being led by Brendan Lee who, in addition to wearing the blue and gold of Sydney University, has previously been selected as an Australian Universities Rugby League representative.  Brendan has been supported by past players Zein and Richmond Saliba who also bring their experience as high calibre wrestlers to our Club.

We also wanted to thank a number of past players who have attended pre-season training and have made significant contributions to our pre-season preparations.

To see photos from pre-season training check out our Facebook page at:

We will shortly share with you news around appointments to our coaching staff and football support staff.

Congratulations Jake Vrahnos
The Club is also pleased to offer its congratulations to Jake Vrahnos represented Greece A in the 2014 Cabramatta International 9s competition over the weekend.  That competition saw the involvement of some 30  local and international teams.   Jake is just one of the highly skilled players in the Club’s current squad and, as mentioned above, we will distribute player profiles leading up to the commencement of the season.  We think it’s important that you get to know our players!

Orientation Week (commonly known as O-week) is the first week of the university semester and it is designed to provide clubs with an opportunity to promote their activities to students. This year O-Week at Sydney University will be held from 26 to 28 February 2014.

We have a number of players that have volunteered to attend O-Week and to promote the Club and we are currently in working with the NSW Rugby League to co-ordinate promotional activities. We are also working on a number of other initiatives with some of the Club’s supporters and we are happy to hear from anyone with any ideas or suggestions regarding any events or activities which could be held during O-Week.

Regular Season
The 2014 regular football season will commence on 5 April 2014. The fixtures are currently in the process of being finalised and we will share these with you shortly. In addition to the regular season there will also be a nines competition on 29 March 2014.

We will be promoting a number of games and events around our social member program. It would be great to see you all at our games during the 2014 season!

Social Membership Program

A key objective of the Club is to establish a strong financial platform in order to increase the resources available to support our players.  Although the Club has great commercial sponsors on-board, like all clubs we also rely on the support of members to help establish a base from which to achieve our goals.  A core supporter base will also be crucial as we continue to grow our Club and seek to compete in more elite rugby league competitions.

We will be writing to you next week about our social membership program. Your support of that program would be greatly appreciated, which will help us cement the future of our Club.

Thank you to those members who have already returned their applications; and a special mention goes to the Newtown Jets fan who returned his application 5 minutes after we emailed it. Now that’s dedication to our Club!

Behind the scenes we are working on some other exciting initiatives and further updates will be provided shortly.
