Sydney University has come out on top in the most emphatic manner, after defeating Melbourne University in one of Australian hockey’s oldest fixtures on Saturday at Cintra Park, Concord.
Continuing a tradition that dates back over 100 years, the Sydney University men’s team only had last year on their minds as they overturned the 2012 loss to Melbourne University with a thumping 11-0 victory on Saturday.
The Sydney Hockey Association semi-finalists – their first appearance in the finals for 25 years – proved far too strong for their Southern neighbours all over the pitch.
The women’s team were equally as dominant, and capped off a remarkable 2013 season, with a 3-1 victory.
Just over a month ago, the women’s team took out their second consecutive Sydney Women’s Hockey League First Grade Premiership.
Sydney Uni Hockey Club President Ben Chiarella was overwhelmed by the success of the day.
“The event was fantastic,” said Chiarella. “We had a huge crowd and a brilliant atmosphere.”
“We are really keen to send strong teams down to Melbourne next season’s games. It was great to see the men’s team play so well and the women were clinical as always.”
