Sydney University moved to the top of the Sydney First Grade cricket competition ladder with their outright win over Blacktown at Joe McAleer Oval on Saturday.
Having declared at their overnight score of 9-354, Sydney University routed the hosts for 63 in their first innings and 109 in their second visit to the crease to claim 10 competition points.
While the Students relied on a strong batting card to set a solid first innings total on day one (Greg Mail 131, David Miller 58, Tim Ley 55 and Scott Henry 53), the bowlers came to the fore on day two.
Tim Ley (3-15), Nigel Cowell (3-18) and Sean Abbott (2-13) did the damage in Blacktown’s first innings, while Abbott (3-33) and Liam Robertson (2-1) had the best figures of the eight bowlers employed by the Students in Blacktown’s second innings.
The outright points moved Sydney University to 22 after three rounds, with Manly-Warringah (18), Penrith (18), St George (12), Northern District (12) and Campbelltown-Camden (12) making up the top six.
Sydney University also secured an outright in Third Grade and first innings points in Seconds and Fourths, while Fifths fell 21 runs short of the cash.
The highlights of the lower grades were Jack Holloway’s 124 in Fourth Grade’s first innings total of 7(dec)-277, and the all-round efforts of Max Hope in Thirds. He scored 50 and 23 not out and snared 2-7 in helping the Students secure maximum points.
Although unbeaten, Second Grade lie fifth on a tight ladder; Thirds moved to the top of the table with their outright points; Fourths are 10th and Fifths are 11th.
Manly-Warringah head the Club Championship ladder on 354 points, with Sydney University breathing down their necks on 352 and Randwick-Petersham (320) and Northern District (280) making up the top four.
