Six members of the Sydney Uni Lions Women’s Water Polo Club played for the NSW Institute of Sport (NSWIS) team in the opening round of the National Training Centre tournament over the weekend.
Australian Stingers members Hannah Buckling, Keesja Gofers and Lea Barta were joined by fellow Lions Sarah Harris, Tahlia Bogg and Gi Clark in the NSWIS teams that scored resounding wins over WAIS (Western Australian Institute of Sport) 13-7 on Saturday and 13-5 on Sunday at Sutherland Aquatic Centre.
Buckling (Bachelor of Science), Clark (Bachelor of Occupational Therapy) and Bogg are all SUSF Elite Athlete Program (EAP) scholarship holders.
The NSWIS girls totally dominated their WA counterparts in all departments of the games and the Sydney Uni contingent all played a significant part in the successful weekend.
Unfortunately the six Sydney Uni representatives were all ineligible for the opening round of the Sydney L1 Premiership which saw a vastly under-strength Lions play out a creditable 9-9 draw with Sydney Northern Beaches at Ryde. Gabby Wikman was outstanding with four goals and she was backed up by Emma Lewis who scored two.
The Lions L1 team meets UNSW-Wests in Round 2 on Saturday at the Sydney Uni Sports & Aquatic Centre at 3.00pm.
