Second placed Sydney University Women’s Rugby Club (SUWRC) will head into this weekend’s round 11 clash against first placed Parramatta full of confidence after three consecutive victories.
The last time that Sydney Uni played Parramatta the result was an exhilarating fast-paced 10 all draw at Grandville Park in round six in late May.
Since then Sydney Uni have swept aside Warringah (20-7), Waverly (20-0) and Rockdale (17-5).
The last few weeks have seen the debut of Carol Dowty after an ACL reconstruction last year and the return of Barbara Waddell from a collarbone fracture from the 7s season playing a provincial representative team from China.
Unfortunately Sydney Uni have now lost the services of their two French imports – rookie Ysee Amar and expert handballer Estelle Chabat – who have returned to France after their brief and fruitful season (7s and 15s) with the team.
In other women’s rugby news, Sydney Uni have won the inaugural ‘Belinda Scott and Alexandra Hargreaves Shield’ after defeating the Newcastle Wanderers 20-15 at St. Johns Oval last week. The game proved to be a bruising encounter for both teams who were keen to pay their respects to two influential players. The game will take place annually and next year Sydney Uni will travel to Newcastle to defend the shield.
Sydney Uni’s game against Parramatta kicks off at 12pm at St. Johns Oval. Supporters are encouraged to come along and cheer on Sydney Uni before retiring to the Nag’s Head Hotel in Glebe to celebrate “Christmas in July”.
