  3. Refreshed Students seek revenge against Belconnen

Sydney University will be looking to cut down one of the giants of the NEAFL this weekend, when the Students take on second placed Belconnen on Saturday afternoon at Sydney University Oval No. 1.

Playing on one of the most important days on the SUANFC calendar – Old Boys Day – Sydney Uni  will head into the game full of confidence following Belconnen’s surprise 91 point defeat at the hands of the table topping Sydney Swans Reserves two weeks ago.

Despite Belconnen’s last start result, the Students will need to start strongly against an opposing outfit that outplayed Sydney Uni in their round 2 clash. Belconnen won 24-8-152 to 17-15-117.

Coming off the bye the Students will be looking to make it two from two for the second time this season. Since the bye in round 7 Sydney Uni have exploded out of the blocks to win three of their last four games.

Sydney Uni players Callum Kennedy and Cameron Holmes are set to make their debuts this weekend. Kennedy, who last weekend represented the Sydney AFL development squad in their close game against Riverina, has had a strong start to the season in Premier Division and has been rewarded with a call up. Holmes has finally overcome a hamstring issue from the preseason and will finally make his NEAFL debut in the forward line.

Students Co-Captain Tim Barton is excited about the debut of both players and believes that Holmes will have a big impact up forward.

“Cammy Holmes has overcome his hammy issues and will get his long awaited debut at NEAFL level and he should bring some strong pressure into the forward line,” said Barton.

The Students will also be happy to welcome back a number of players who were defeated in a tough NEAFL representative game against Tasmania last weekend.

Barton is under no illusions about how difficult this weekend’s game against Belconnen will be.

“Belconnen have been one of the benchmark sides this year along with the Swans and so it is going to be a great challenge this week, but we can’t wait to get out there,” said Barton.

SUANFC would like to welcome all fans to Sydney University Oval No1 on Saturday. The first game will take place at 9am, while the Old Boys will play at 1pm.

The NEAFL side will take the field at 2pm.
