Despite a strong start and finish to their round 10 NEAFL clash against Eastlake, Sydney University were unable to reign in the Demons who ran out 28 point victors on Saturday afternoon at Star Track Oval, Canberra.

Sydney Uni, who had put together back-to-back wins over Tuggeranong and Ainslie, started the game strongly and led by nine points at the first break. Despite their dominance, the Students were unable to capitalise fully as both teams kicked four goals; with Sydney Uni also kicking five behinds.

A determined Eastlake outfit then blew the game wide open in the second quarter with some very accurate kicking, as they booted seven goals to Sydney Uni’s one major to go into the sheds with a 10-5.65 to 5-6.36 lead.

The Students fought back in the third and fourth quarters, but were unable to chase down a disciplined Eastlake side that made the most of their opportunities. The final score was 15.13-103 to 11.9-75.

Peter Dugmore kicked three goals for the Students and Tom Elkington added two of his own, while Adam Campbell, Timothy Barton, Tom Morrison, Tom Ayton and Gerard Wilkie all put in strong performances.

After such a strong performance against Ainslie last weekend the Students were disappointed with their performance but have learnt some valuable lessons.

“It was a disappointing loss considering our form leading into the match,” explained SUANFC High Performance Manager and NEAFL squad member Tom Ayton. “The loss shows us that form is temporary and you have to bring you’re ‘A’ game every weekend in this highly competitive NEAFL competition.”

This weekend the Students take on Labrador – who are sitting in second last place on the Northern Conference ladder – at Drummoyne Oval at midday on Saturday.
