Sydney Uni Wrestling Club members secured three gold medals at last weekend’s 2013 Australia Cup freestyle wrestling competition held in Victoria.
Competing against wrestlers from Australia, India, Pakistan and New Zealand, Sydney Uni’s Jayden Lawrence won junior 74kg division gold and senior 74kg division gold medals. Lawrence was also awarded the best wrestler at the Australia Cup.
Compatriot Arzhang Janipour also won gold in the senior 105kg division. Brett Fitzgerald, competing in the senior 84kg division, won two of his three matches before he was forced to retire from the competition after sustaining an injury in his third and final match.
Lawrence will now turn his attention to competing in the following events over the next few months – Senior Commonwealth Championships (26-28 July in Glasgow, Scotland), Junior World Championships (13-18 August in Sofia, Bulgaria), and Senior World Championships (16-22 September in Budapest, Hungary).
