Universities Women’s Cricket Club (UWCC) representatives Alex Blackwell and Rachael Haynes have been selected in the Australian women’s cricket team that will tour England for a newly formatted Ashes series in August.

Blackwell (vice-captain) and Haynes, who were today also placed on new Cricket Australia contracts, will take part in the Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars push to retain the title they won on home soil two years ago in a dramatic Test at Bankstown Oval.

The twist this time around is the new format to the women’s Ashes – which will see the battle across all three formats of the game, with six points for the Test win and two points’ awarded for each of the six limited overs games – as announced last week.

In other news, UWCC team mates Kara Sutherland (SUSF Mollie Dive scholarship holder and Bachelor of Applied Science – Exercise & Sports Science student at Sydney University) and Erin Burns (recently graduated from Sydney Uni) have both been selected for the Shooting Stars program.

The Shooting Stars squad is primarily a training squad to underpin the future depth requirements of the Australian Women’s program. Shooting Stars squad members will participate in a camps program and have access to satellite coaching. A Shooting Stars touring squad will be selected later in the year.
