The Southern Design Sydney Uni Flames have signed experienced scoring guard Renae Camino for the 2012/13 WNBL season.

Camino, who possesses WNBL career averages of 14 points and six rebounds per game and has represented the Opals, will provide athleticism and another proven scoring option for the Flames.

The 177cm guard is a proven winner – Camino was part of last season’s WNBL Championship winning team the Bendigo Spirit. She was also a key performer in the Adelaide Lightning’s defeat of the Flames in the 2008/09 WNBL decider. She has played 147 games in the WNBL over seven seasons, as well as playing in three other major leagues around the world – US, Italy and France.

Camino is currently plying her trade with the Bendigo Lady Braves in the SEABL – Victoria’s premier basketball competition. She has started the 2013 season brilliantly, leading her team in scoring, averaging more than 20 points per game.

Flames Head Coach Karen Dalton said she was looking forward to working with the 26 year old Wollongong junior once her commitments with Bendigo end at the completion of the SEABL season, which will occur either in August or early September.

“I am excited to have Renae as part of the Flames program. She is a tremendous athlete and it’s great to have her back in NSW. I am really looking forward to working with her over the coming season.”

Camino is also excited by her move back to her home state. “I’m really looking forward to playing for the Flames this season,” said Camino. “I’ve always had an interest in playing basketball in Sydney. I’m a Wollongong girl, so it will be really nice to play close to home.”

Camino is also confident that she has made the right basketball decision in heading to the Dalton coached Flames. “I’m looking to develop my game and become a better player by working on my game day-in and day-out. Speaking to Karen, I felt that she could help me with this development and I’m looking forward to improving and getting back to playing some of my best basketball.”

“Sydney Uni always has a great team so I’m confident that we will have a strong season coming up. I’m happy to help the group in any way that Karen wants me to.”

The signing of Camino comes off the back of the Flames re-signing of key players Alicia Poto (captain), Katie-Rae Ebzery, Rohanee Cox and Jaimee Kennedy for the 2013/14 WNBL season. The Flames are looking forward to announcing some further signings and re-signings in the coming months.
