Playing in front of an excited crowd at the Sydney Football Stadium on Friday night during the Waratahs v Cheetahs Super Rugby half-time break, Sydney Uni’s women’s rugby team put on a great show as they drew 5-5 with last year’s Sydney Clubs Women’s Rugby Premiers the Warringah Rats.
Playing in front of a crowd of just over 12,000 spectators, and pumped up after a pep-talk from the Waratahs mascot ‘Tah Man’, Uni kicked off the seven minutes of helter skelter rugby with a physical start. Sydney Uni centre Julia Epstein was first to score after a dummy saw her run 40m to slide in between the posts – much to the delight of the roaring crowd who cheered her all the way.
In the final moments Warringah fought back with an unconverted try to tie the game at 5-5.
Sydney University Women’s Rugby Club (SUWRC) player and Public Relations Officer Marjorie Linares was wrapped with the girls performance. “SUWRC would like to thank the Waratahs for this opportunity as it was a great step for women in rugby,” said Linares. “Waratahs representatives noted there had never been this much spectator participation during a half-time activity.”
