Sydney University will be relying on its women’s cricket sides to fill the trophy cabinets for the 2012-13 season, with three of the four teams on track for semi-final berths with a round to play.
Universities First XI head the Sydney Grade women’s competition and have already wrapped up the Minor Premiership, irrespective of the result of their final regular season match this Sunday against the third-placed Northern District’s at Mark Taylor Oval.
Universities are sitting comfortably at the top of the competition ladder with 89 points, 16 clear of second placed Bankstown Sports (73 points) after easily accounting for Campbelltown-Camden by 94 runs at Sydney University Oval No. 1 last weekend.
Northern District’s and fourth-placed Campbelltown-Camden should make up the top four in the First Grade competition, with the semi-finals scheduled for March 17.
Universities Seconds will finish fifth on the ladder after their game was washed out on Sunday – missing a semi-final berth, while Thirds are currently sitting in second place and are guaranteed a spot in the qualifying final.
Universities Brewer Shield (Under 17) side, who convincingly defeated league leaders Campbelltown at Sydney Uni Oval No. 2 last weekend, need to defeat Gordon at David Phillips Oval this Sunday to maintain fourth spot on the ladder and a semi-final berth.
Despite only two home games going ahead for Universities over the weekend due to the weather, the club raised approximately $400 as part of a Pink Stumps Day for the McGrath foundation, through the sale of sweatbands, cakes, drinks and a raffle.
St George-Sutherland head the Club Championship in the women’s competition with 1143.60 points, with Universities second on 906.10 points.
After a stellar 2011-12 season – when they collected the First and Second grade men’s titles – Sydney University’s men’s cricket teams won’t feature in the end-of-year celebrations for the 2012-13 season.
With the second day of a two-day round to be played, followed by a limited overs round to finish the competition proper, Sydney University Firsts are 15th on the 20-team competition ladder.
Second Grade hold down 10th place, Thirds are currently ninth, Fourths lie 15th and Fifths are ninth, with the club lying 12th on the Club Championship ladder.
