Sydney University are well-placed to earn first innings points in their Round 13 two-day match against Hawkesbury at Owen Earle Oval.

The reigning Sydney Grade Cricket premiers were 9-328 at stumps on day one but might have left their run too late to push for three consecutive Belvidere Cups.

The 15th-placed Students would need outright wins over Hawkesbury and Fairfield-Liverpool (Rosedale Oval on March 2 and 9) and maximum points from the final limited overs match, against Manly-Warringah (Sydney University No.1 Oval on March 16), to have a faint hope of making the final six.

All-rounder Ian Moran top-scored for the University on Saturday with nine boundaries in his 128-minute 67. David Miller (63) and opener Mark Faraday (49) were also strong contributors, while Tim Ley (39 not out) and Ben Joy (32 not out) shared a 76-run ninth-wicket partnership that will allow an overnight declaration and the chance of pushing for maximum points.
