SUSF Elite Athlete Program (EAP) scholarship holders Nina Khoury and Mathilda Carmichael have been selected to do battle against the best Oceania hockey nations for one of two lucrative Oceania qualifying spots in the 2013 Junior World Cup.
Khoury and Carmichael – Sydney Uni Hockey Club (SUHC) representatives – have been selected in a 17 woman squad for the Jillaroos that will compete in the Oceania Junior World Cup Qualifiers on the Gold Coast from February 25 to March 3. The Australian Junior Men’s team, the Burras, will also be competing.
The 2013 Junior World Cup Qualifiers (JWCQ) will for the first time involve Pacific Island members. Traditionally, the qualifiers have been Australia and New Zealand playing a series to decide the rankings for the two qualifying spots.
The women’s Junior World Cup Qualifiers (JWCQ) involves Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Samoa. Visiting men’s nations are New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Samoa and Vanuatu.
Two Oceanian hockey nations will win the right to compete at the 2013 Junior World Cup in India in November.
Khoury’s selection in the Oceania Junior World Cup qualification squad is another tremendous achievement, and comes just one week after helping the Jillaroos to a gold medal at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival (AYOF).
