Sydney University collected six valuable points from a first innings win over North Sydney in their two-day match that ended at University No.1 Oval on Saturday.

The defending premiers won two of the five two-day matches to open the 2012-13 season, both coming off centuries from Greg Mail.

The record-breaking opener hit 126 not out at Waverley Oval in the first round as Sydney University earned first innings points over Eastern Suburbs. That was followed by a first innings loss to St George at Waverley Oval.

Mail and Ian Moran were absent for the next two matches when they were involved with Sydney Sixers’ unbeaten run in the Champions League Twenty20 tournament in South Africa – Moran as an all-rounder in the winning team and Mail as the assistant coach.

Round three saw the Students on the end of another first innings loss in a high-scoring affair where Nick Larkin scored 113 of Sydney University’s 303 only to see Sutherland opener Matthew Hughston crack 144 not out to steer his team home at Sydney University No.1 Oval.

Sydney University suffered another first innings loss in their Round Four clash with Gordon at University headquarters. Larkins’ 53 in a total of 146 was not enough to stop the visitors, who replied with 314.

The final match in the first two-day tranche saw Mail stroke 131 in Sydney University’s first innings of 306 at University No.1 Oval. The Student rolled North Sydney for 229 on day two, with Tim Ley collecting 3-36 and Will Somerville 3-65.

Sydney University now sit 12th on the competition ladder after five rounds, with UNSW and St George holding down top spot with 38 points, and Sutherland (24), Sydney (24), Blacktown (22) and Gordon (21) making up the top six.

Sydney University Seconds hold down second place on the competition ladder behind frontrunners Sutherland, while Thirds are placed 8th, Fourths are placed 11th and Fifths hold down 7th place. That leaves Sydney University 8th on the Club Championship ladder which is headed by St George.
