Sydney University Athletics Club (SUAC) representative James Nipperess has claimed his fifth NSW State title after an emphatic victory in Saturday night’s NSW 3000m Championships at Sydney Olympic Park.

Following a very fast early pace, the Australian Cross Country Champion and Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness (SUSF) Elite Athlete Program (EAP) scholarship holder led by almost 50m with a kilometre remaining and held on bravely, as he finished clear of Commonwealth games representative Ben Moreau and Olympian Jeffrey Hunt.

The win sets Nipperess up well for fast early season runs at the Zatopek meet in a fortnight’s time, and this weekend at the NSW State Relay Championships where he will anchor a red hot SUAC 4x1500m team.

In the women’s race Milly Clark finished third in the 3000m, slightly outside her personal best in difficult windy conditions. Clark will also contest the Zatopek meet as well as the NSW State Relay Championships where she will run both the 4×800 and 4x1500m events.

No less than 10 SUAC athletes ran personal best times on the weekend – a very promising way for the club to start the season. SUAC will contest the NSW State Relay Championships this weekend where the club is favoured to take
home a large number of medals.
