While openers Ed Cowan (136 for Australia against South Africa ) and Scott Henry (78 for NSW against Victoria) were making their mark, Sydney University’s grade sides engaged in some strange Round 4 two-day matches against  Gordon.

With great wisdom in hindsight, perhaps Sydney University Firsts might have bowled first when they won the toss at No.1 Oval. They elected to bat and were rolled for 146, with Nick Larkins’ 53 staving off real embarrassment for the defending premiers.

Harry Evans (4-20) and James Kennedy (3-35) enjoyed first use of the wicket before Reece Bombas (69), Greg Lewis (54), Iain Beverley (40) and Brendan McDonald (37) helped the visitors to 314 and first innings points when the wicket had settled down.

Sydney University Seconds pulled off an amazing outright result over Gordon at Chatswood Oval after the hosts had headed them on the first innings.

The Students won the toss and elected to bowl, a decision that seemed justified when they had the hosts back in the pavilion with 211 on the board.  Jonte Pattison (3-34), Michael Culkoff (2-19) and Kerrod McPherson (2-43) shared the spoils.

But things then went pear-shaped. Julian Stephenson ran through the Sydney University batting line-up to finish with 8-50 off 28 overs as the Students racked up 113.

However, the match held another twist thanks to Ben Joy, who collected 6-50 as Gordon were rolled for 85 in their second innings.

Chasing 183 for an outright result, the Students finished with 7-184 thanks to Adam Theobald (71) and Liam Robertson (46) who had also topscored in the first innings with an unbeaten 39. By leading on the first innings the hosts collected four points, while defending premiers Sydney University came away with six to remain at the top of the table.

Good news came on two fronts in the Third Grade encounter at Sydney University No.2 Oval where the Students celebrated a first innings win and the maiden grade century for young Jack Hill.

Hill crafted an unbeaten 127 as the Students posted 6(dec)- 271 in reply to Gordon’s 195. The visitors were 1-102 in their second innings when stumps were drawn.

Hill backed up his Saturday feat with a top-score of 73 in Sydney University’s Poidevin-Gray loss to Gordon at Chatswood Oval on Sunday. Gordon racked up 8-238  in reply to Sydney 9-237 in the limited over fixture.

Gordon collected outright points in the Fourth Grade tussle at Killara Oval and first innings points in the Fifth Grade match at St Paul’s College Oval.

In the Metropolitan Cup match at Whalan No.2 Oval, Sydney University came home with first innings  points in a low-scoring affair against Blacktown.

Having won the toss and batted, the Students grafted 140 thanks to Michael Barwick (48) and Jay Blamey (24) before rolling the hosts for 103.

In other news, 22 year-old Sydney University wicket-keeper James Crowley made his New South Wales Futures League debut in the four-day match against South Australia at Gilderol Stadium, Glenelg which began on Monday (November 12).

Crowley scored 21 runs, as NSW compiled a total of 332 before being bowled out by South Australia.
