The Sydney University Hockey Club (SUHC) women’s 1st grade team sealed the Sydney Hockey Association Minor Premiership over the weekend in emphatic style, crushing Macarthur 14-0.
Strengthened by the return of four Australian Junior World Cup Squad members, SUHC were ruthless against a Macarthur team facing potential relegation, scoring three goals inside the first five minutes of play. The remainder of the match continued along the same route, with Sydney Uni crashing in goal after goal past the helpless Macarthur goalkeeper.
The 14 goal win cemented Sydney Uni’s position as Minor Premiers in Sydney’s top women’s competition and the strongest women’s hockey competition in Australia.
This Sunday’s semi-final will see SUHC come against second placed Gordon at Olympic Park at 1pm. The winner progresses straight through to the Grand Final, while the loser plays an elimination game the following Sunday.
In further great news for SUHC, 15 of the clubs 25 teams have qualified for the Sydney Hockey Association finals series, meaning more than half of the 360 club members will be chasing premiership glory.
Six of the nine women’s teams are in the finals (1s, 4s, 5s, 6s, 7As and 7Bs), all but two of the junior teams have also qualified, along with the masters B’s and C’s teams, and men’s 3s, 4s and 8s.
SUHC President Andy Elton couldn’t be happier with the performance of the club.
“Having some 25 teams commit to over seven months of training and competition is no mean feat, and I want to congratulate and thank all the players for that,” said Elton.
“I also want to thank the coaches, umpires, managers, parents, administrators and supporters who have joined the journey this season.”
