University of Sydney athletes Sarah Stewart and Katie Hill and the Australian women’s wheelchair basketball team have given themselves the best chance of progression through to the semi-finals after finishing top of Group A at the 2012 London Paralympics, following the results of their opponents overnight.
Despite victories to both the Netherlands and Canada, which saw all three nations draw level at the top of the group on 7 points, the Gliders will tonight take on fourth placed Group B nation Mexico in a quarter-final at the North Greenwich Arena, following a superior head to head tournament record.
Overnight in the pool, three-time Paralympians and University of Sydney representatives Katrina Porter and Sarah Rose were unable to qualify for their finals. Porter finished 12th in the 100m freestyle S7 and 14th in the 50m freestyle S7 heats, while Rose also fought gallantly to finish 11th in the heats of the 200m individual medley SM6 event.
University of Sydney Paralympian Jenny Blow, and her Australian women’s goalball team, have suffered a loss overnight to the United States 3-0. The girls will play Sweden in their final game of the tournament tonight.
