SUSF Elite Athlete Program (EAP) scholarship holder Lara Tamsett is the 2012 City2Surf female champion, braving chilly conditions on Sunday morning to post a winning time of 46 minutes and 55 seconds.
The Media & Communications student said she was elated by her win after missing last year’s race because of injury.
“I feel really, really elated but relieved as well,” Tamsett told The Sunday Times after the race.
“I really wanted to come out and win it for my friends and family who are here supporting.”
Tamsett said she finished in close to the same time as her 2010 victory, before missing last year’s race and then narrowly missing out on a spot in Australia’s Olympic team for London.
“I’ll blame the winds for not improving my time,” she said.
Tamsett was not only running for herself, but for a charity she is supporting – Indigenous Marathon Project (IMP).
IMP helps to change the lives of Indigenous Australians through running.
“All the funds I raise will go directly towards IMP’s leadership scholarship program, which is used to assist past and present runners involved with IMP to further their education, help them to attend running camps, and to develop local running and walking groups and events,” said Tamsett.
“This will in turn help to educate and empower other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to live an active, healthy lifestyle and decrease instances of preventable disease. Please help me support this great cause!”
Tamsett has so far raised in excess of $1750.
