Sydney University’s one-nil win over Illawarra Stingrays at J.J. Kelly Park on Sunday kept them in third place on the NSW Women’s Premier League soccer ladder with genuine prospects of a title shot.

Erin Wilson’s 27-minute strike was the difference between two committed outfits on Sunday, giving the Students the competition points and the psychological advantage should they meet come finals time.

And that is a distinct possibility with the final six all but decided with one round of the competition proper to be played. NSWIS head the competition on 62 points, with Macarthur Rams (54), Sydney University (54), Illawarra Stingrays (48), NWS Koalas (47) and Manly United FC (45) making up the top six.

Sydney University will take on 10th placed Sutherland Shire at Wentworth Park at 3pm on Sunday in the final round with a chance of snaring second place on the ladder.

Sydney University Reserve Grade also have title hopes, sitting in fourth place on a ladder that is headed by Marconi Stallions on 49 points. Manly United (40), NWS Koalas (39), Sydney University (38), Illawarra Stingrays (36) and Macarthur Rams (34) make up the top six.

In the lower grades, the fourth-placed Under 16s and second-placed Under 12s are also in line for finals football.
