Sydney University Elite Athlete Program (EAP) scholarship holder Nicholas Hough has all but secured his spot on the Australian Spark athletics team heading to Barcelona for the 2012 IAAF World Junior Championships later this year.
The first year IT and Law student met the criteria for nomination to the team after running a NSW under 20 record time of 13.71 in the hurdles at the 2012 Australian Junior Athletics Championships held over the weekend.
Another nine Sydney University Athletic Club (SUAC) athletes competed over the weekend at the championships held at Sydney Olympic Park.
Thomas Soliman took home bronze in the long jump with a huge leap of 7.37m, while Elliot Lang won bronze in the men’s javelin with a throw of 64.77m. Jin Su Jung also won a medal in the 4x100m running for NSW.
All of the remaining SUAC athletes finished in the top eight in the country for the respective events. Matthew Mountford was sixth in the shot put (13.74m), Shakti Rathore was fifth in the triple jump (13.51m), Christian Lozada sixth in the 400m hurdles (54.36), Eliza Barton fifth in the 800m (2.12.00) and seventh in the 1500m (4.35), while Andrew Baker finished sixth in the Javelin (61.76m).
In other news, Hugh Williams has been selected to represent Australia at the World University Cross Country Championships, to be held in Poland later in the year, after strong performances at state and national level on the cross country circuit.
