Sydney University Athletics Club finished second to UTS Norths in the men’s and women’s events at the NSW Club Championships at Sydney Olympic Park on the weekend.
In the women’s event the standout competitors for SUAC were Larissa Pasternatsky, who finished 2nd in the 100m and 1st in the 200m.
Lara Tamsett made a return to the track after an extended lay-off with injury to post a convincing win in the 3000m.
In the field events Jacqui Fry was impressive drawing on her heptathlon background and getting through five events in the afternoon, while Alix Kennedy won the women’s discus.
The men’s event was a very tight contest with SUAC and UTS North’s swapping the lead on a number of occasions.
UTS Norths eventually prevailed by the very slim margin of seven points (which is the difference between 1st and 5th in any of the nine events).
SUAC’s Lachlan Renshaw made his debut on the track this season winning his 800m race by an enormous margin. His next competitive run will be at the Sydney Track Classic on February 18 against a world-class field.
Other notable performances included Russell Desaix-Chin and Hugh Williams, who finished 1st and 2nd respectively in the 3000m, Daniel Macdonald 2nd in the 800m and Shakti Rathore 2nd in the long jump.
The next SUAC club event will be held on March 9 in Brisbane, where SUAC and the University of Queensland will stage a match against each other. It is hoped the contest will become an annual event.
