After opening round losses to Fremantle Marlins, Sydney University’s men’s and women’s teams registered their first wins in the 2011 National Water Polo League competitions at the hands of Drummoyne Devils on Saturday.

The men’s team has welcomed the return of Thomas Whalen, who sop-scored with four goals in their 11-9 win over Drummoyne at Drummoyne Pool.

The win followed 12-6 and 8-5 losses to defending premiers Fremantle Marlins in the opening rounds at Sydney University Sports and Fitness Centre.

In the women’s league, Sydney University opened their season’s account with a 9-7 win over Drummoyne, following 10-8 and 15-10 losses to Fremantle. Alicia Brightwell led the scoring with three, while Gabby Wikman and Georgie Clarke each scored two.

The action moves to the Dawn Fraser Pool this Saturday when the men’s and women’s teams take on Balmain Tigers. The women’s match begins at 1.15pm and the men’s at 2.45pm.
