Sydney University fast bowlers went to the extremes of their profession at the weekend, with an injury forcing Stuart Clark to withdraw from the Australian line-up on the same day Mark Cameron collected 5-14 to help the Students to a valuable limited overs win over North Sydney.
Clark is expected to undergo surgery to remove bone spurs from his bowling elbow, forcing him to miss the upcoming Test series against South Africa and possibly much more cricket, depending on his recovery.
The commerce masters student is believed to have been carrying the injury for some months but succumbed to the pain during training at the WACA ground in preparation for the First Test against the Proteas.
“It’s no secret that I have had a bad elbow for a while,” a disappointed Clark told a news conference in Perth. “It’s flared up. It’s not acceptable to play.
“I think it’s a throwing issue that has just got worse over time. It’s something that hasn’t affected me until recently, until, I suppose, the (recently completed) Indian series.
“I have to go back to Sydney or Melbourne and get the (surgery) process rolling. I thought it was getting better. Obviously it’s not.”
Clark, who made a stunning debut in South Africa in 2006 and has since collected 90 Test scalps, was keen to play this series.
“Playing South Africa in this Test match and the two matches in Sydney and Melbourne against the second-best team, and we’re number one team, what can you say?
Meanwhile, Cameron helped Sydney University to a bonus point when he sent down 10 devastating overs, including two maidens, at University No.1 on Saturday to finish with 5-14.
Sydney University skipper Greg Mail won the toss and had no hesitation sending Norths in on a muggy day following rain. The visitors were all out for 140 in 45 overs, with Ian Moran (2-19) sharing in the wickets with Cameron.
After losing openers Moran (5) and Mail (11), Ed Cowan and Will Hay took to the Norths attack in a 124-run partnership that had the Students over the line in just 28-4 overs.
Cowan’s unbeaten 60 came off 67 deliveries and included six boundaries, while Hay’s unbeaten 60 came off 87 balls with nine boundaries and two sixers.
The win lifted Sydney University to sixth on the limited overs competition table and sixth on the overall competition ladder.
And with wins in Second and Third grades, Sydney University reclaimed the lead in the Club Championship with 779 points. Gordon (769), Penrtih (767) and Campbelltown-Camden (749) are in close pursuit.
